NSW: Tszyu loses bid to avoid paying damages to former promoter
SYDNEY, April 18 AAP - Champion boxer Kostya Tszyu today lost a legal bid to avoid
paying his share of a multi-million dollar damages award to his former promoter.
In 1998, boxing promoter Bill Mordey's Fightvision was awarded $7.3 million, which
increased to $8.5 million with interest the following year, after Tszyu was found to have
breached his contract to only fight in bouts promoted by Fightvision.
Most of the damages were paid by Sky Channel, which was found to have interfered in
Tszyu's contract relations with Fightvision, with the boxer left owing $767,000.
Tszyu took the matter to the New South Wales Industrial Relations Commission (IRC)
in an effort to avoid paying the money by having the Fightvision contract declared void.
In September last year a NSW Supreme Court judge granted an injunction, however, stopping
Tszyu from pursuing that course by concluding it was an abuse of process.
Tszyu appealed against the injunction but the NSW Court of Appeal today dismissed his action.
Three Court of Appeal judges upheld the Supreme Court judge's decision and agreed Tszyu's
action in the IRC was an abuse of process.
