Qld: Charges likely after school outing turns bad

BRISBANE, Dec 4 AAP - A man was stabbed in the back with a bottle after an end-of-year
school trip turned ugly north of Brisbane today.

Sergeant Phil Sharpe of Redcliffe police said a group of 25 year 11 students from a
local high school had left this morning for the two-hour barge trip to Moreton Island,
across Moreton Bay.

But they began drinking and a deckhand on board the Combi Trader took exception to
their unruly behaviour.

The group disembarked at Moreton Island but several returned to the barge and allegedly
assaulted the deckhand, who was hit over the head with a bottle and stabbed in the back.

He had to be taken by water police to Redcliffe Hospital but was not believed to be
seriously injured.

Police reinforcements were rushed to the island and accompanied the group on the barge
back to Redcliffe, where some were due to face questioning and possible charges later
tonight.
