Vic: Man died after nose-straightening operation, court told

A court in Melbourne has been told a man who went to hospital to have his nose straighteneddied after medical staff botched the insertion of a tube into his airway.

The Melbourne Coroner's Court has been told PETER HERRMANN went to Echuca RegionalHospital in northern Victoria for rhinoplasty in July 2000.

Coroner PHIL BYRNE has been told Mr HERRMANN's surgery went to plan, but his heartstopped beating when a tube was incorrectly inserted in his trachea while he was recovering.

He was resuscitated and taken to Bendigo Hospital, but died three days later.

The court has been told the Echuca hospital had been trialling a device which wouldhave detected the incorrect insertion of the tube, but didn't have one on the day of MrHERRMANN's surgery.
